With the right mix of attitudes, it is never too late for someone to reach for his goals. At a young age, my interest has always been in the sciences. As a child, I have always been fascinated about the world I live in and there is no better way to fill my curiosity than conducting experiments and proving my theories using the scientific method. However, as time passed, I have had a deteriorating interest in the sciences. I have started to become interested in literature, particularly, how different cultures express their literature.

This change of interest spawned when I came to Australia to study in the University of Queensland. Having hailed from Hong Kong, a country with a culture greatly different from that of Australia, I have seen how different the literature in the two countries is portrayed and written. This piqued my interest and I wanted to dig deeper into it but being a science student prevented me from doing so. My mindset was that it would be very difficult to shift to an entirely different field at that point in time.

After some time, I had a medical condition which prompted me to discontinue my studies in Australia and go back home to Hong Kong. It was actually a blessing in disguise as I had more time to think thoroughly what I really want. In the end, I have decided that I want to pursue literature. This led me to the College of International Education and while I havent had any major courses in the Arts, I did take courses that allowed me to understand literature in greater context and how to effectively compare literary works. I must admit that switching to literature felt a bit foreign but nevertheless, my perseverance produced fruitful results as I have had a better GPA results.

My ultimate goal now is to become a practitioner in the Journalism or Cultural and Media Industries. I strongly believe that I possess the necessary skills to accomplish this goal. I have strong critical reasoning and I can comprehend very well. Even as I am a non-native English speaker, I have demonstrated a mastery of the English language proof of which is my IELTS score of 7.5. In the recent years, I have become a very wide reader. I have engrossed myself reading literary works from different cultures and I find that I easily absorb knowledge.

While I have great confidence in my skills, I must enter an outstanding educational institution so that my skills will be amplified. The University of Hong Kong will become a perfect avenue for me to demonstrate and improve my intellectual ability. It has a strong faculty background. And good teachers are all that Ill ever need.

If I do manage to get in, other students will find my optimism very enlightening. I am also a very active person and I have shown exemplary leadership skills in the past. I also feel that actively pursuing knowledge is underestimated in our society and I am more than willing to be a self-motivated student in my own study. The University of Hong Kong will also benefit from this mix of attitudes.
