The reason why you are applying for the KAIST and why you must get into the KAIST.

It is of no doubt that with the increasing needs of skills combined with innovation steadily increasing in the near future, it will be important for artists to not only specialize in the discipline of art alone but to be well-versed in many different areas in order to quickly adapt to the unpredictable world that always demands something unique and different. I believe this is especially true in the field of industrial design because it is crucial for industrial artists to have an in-depth knowledge of both the applied science and applied art in order to be able to design solutions towards problems of form, usability, user ergonomics, engineering, marketing, brand development and sales. In order to pursue my dream in the field of industrial design, I have come to a firm realization that the best way to become a global industrial designer, it is not necessary to study abroad what lies at the core of this idea is an environment to prepare students with top quality education to become global leaders. I strongly believe that KAIST is the only school in Korea that is able to further develop my creativity and artistic skills, and foster my understanding of state-of-the-art technology and critical thinking skills. My determination to choose KAIST is thus to entertain the opportunity to receive the valuable education to become a well rounded industrial designer in both science and art.

The possibilities of the applicant to become a success leader with creativities and leadership after the graduation in KAIST. (state the grounds)

Now ranked as the leading digital country, Korea has shown sturdy development in science and technology to become an excelling competitor in the global market. However, over the recent years, the global market has witnessed the power of state-of-the-art designs. Many consumers now choose to buy products that are aesthetically appealing over products of higher quality. I truly believe that when our advanced technology combines with more refined artistic creativity, Korea will lead all other countries of the world. I am an individual with both creative and artistic capabilities. I think in terms of beauty and how to enhance it. This is the reason that I have received excellence in art up to high school since 9th grade. Although I come from a very small international school, I have tried to seek every opportunity I encountered to bring an impact to the world I live in. For instance, once I designed logos for our schools sports department and created prints for t-shirts to raise funds for the child soldiers in Northern Uganda. Being a Third Culture Kid (TCK), I am proficient in Korean, English, and Chinese languages. I strongly believe that with the invaluable opportunity, guidance, and knowledge provided by KAIST, I can become the international artist I dream to be, and bring even greater prestige to this renowned institute and the world of art and science at large by playing a leadership role.

What kind of technological areas of talent or interest do you have

I view art and design as not the same. I believe art demands more creativity and deviation from the standard. Thus, when design is combined with art, the result is state-of-the-art innovation which has a more profound impact on the consumer. I have received excellence in art every year since 9th grade, and I am the first to receive this award as a freshman in high school. I believe that I am gifted in art and I see my foundation in art to become an asset to my future education and career in the industrial design. I want to study industrial design because I am deeply interested in finding out new ways (creative plus artistic) to see how aesthetic and ergonomics can be fused together to innovate objects around me that are more useful for in humanity. Moreover, I have always been fascinated by innovative designs and their ability to influence the consumers decisions. I realize that creativity and artistic capabilities alone would not make a successful industrial designer. Therefore, I am eager to learn more about the different relevant areas of industrial design, such as ergonomics, engineering, market placement, and consumer psychology. I especially hope to become a well-rounded individual in these closely-related areas through the generalist curriculum to gain a deep understanding of engineering, science and technology involved in industrial design. I see KAIST as one source to provide me with all the necessary skills I need in these areas.

During your extra-curricular, activities, or any other volunteer works, what do you think is the most important activity you have done among them and what influence did it affect you

As Socrates states in Platos Allegory of the Cave, that an enlightened being would not neglect sufferings of this world, I strongly believe that we, as the privileged to be educated  should not neglect the deprivation of the world, but take the responsibility to give back our talent and skills to the world to help the underprivileged. I have always wanted to use my abilities and gifts to make an impact around me. Although I didnt have access to many opportunities, I remain proactive. After I watched Invisible Children, a film that exposes the untold story of the child soldiers in Northern Uganda, I decided to seek help from my teachers to form a school club and possibly create a clothing line devoted for the cause of reaching out to the abused children in Northern Uganda. At this small club, I have organized several meetings and screenings to raise awareness on this issue in our school. In one month, our club was able to raise around 17000 RMB (about 2490). I am currently working to make a clothing line for this cause with several teachers. Through this experience, I have learned how to positively impact the world around us all we need is the initiative to do so. Furthermore, this event gave students, including myself, a hands-on experience as how to implement our school learning to make this world a better place.

The difficulties that you have overcome

When I decided to pursue a profession in art, my greatest obstacle came as opposition from my parents. My parents wanted me to walk in the stable path to support me to further my studies in art. Convincing them to support my passion for arts was a long and emotional process. For a while, my father refused to talk to me and join me at dinner table. My mom often quietly cried in her room. It was painful for me to see my parents struggling. But I knew that my parents had a view different from me they didnt see my artistic gift to make me a successful professional. Thus, I gradually convinced them with my definition of success to pursue my passion, to prove successful professionally, and to show the enormous impact art carries for the world.

Although KAIST looks for students that excel in the field of science, I ask KAIST to consider my dream, skills, and passion to become a leader in global industrial designer. I must say that to reach this stage, I have fought through both psychological and social pressures. It is my dream to pursue my education in KAIST because I know it is the RSTj
