The womanman on the street interview was conducted with a total of 18 respondents. From these, six men and six women of various backgrounds who had interesting definitions and insights were chosen and written down. Below are their varying responses to the question, what is art
One salesman on the street claimed that Art is what experts say it is. While a child in the park has a view that Art is painting, music, actingeverything, I guess.

One housewife interviewed in a fast food chain said that You really cant define art. Its always different to different people. But for me, art is something I can appreciate. Maybe something inspiring. Something nice. To this statement, a waiter in a grocery agrees saying that It depends on who you ask. I think art is art as long as at least one person appreciates it. One Student in a mall also thought along these lines saying that she likes art, but I cant really say what it is. It just is.

Deeper definitions of art were stated by several people. The first is a Self-proclaimed artist in a restaurant Art is what pulls your soul into a new world where your senses are elevated into a new plane of existence, making you want to dwell on it forever. His companion, on the other hand, has a different view of art saying that Art is the soul of artists laid bare for the world to see. In a sense, a line cook on the street echoed the second self-proclaimed artists thoughts. He says, in the simplest terms, that art is A form of expression.

The ambiguity of art and what it is, is stated by dancer who was near a studio. When asked the question, she replied, Art Thats hard. Its probably the most indefinable thing in the world. Youll find people who agree what it is and what it is not, but I guess all can agree that art is what appeals to our sense, culture, emotion and we can define it for what it is because it is a representation of our life or at least an aspect of it.

This claim by the dancer is probably one of the reasons why art means differently to different people. Such ambiguity is the cause for some of the remarks stated in a babysitters words from over the phone Its something that doesnt matter if you think its good or bad. If the artist say its art, then it is. So I guess when children doodle on walls and they say its art, thats counted too, right I think theyre no different from abstract art. A more extreme reaction to this is a statement by another student in a mall I know the world doesnt agree with what I think art should be. It should be more structured. I mean, Greek and Renaissance arts were beautiful. You cant contest thats art. I think modern and post-modern art are not really art. At least, the abstract ones. I mean, if I can chip off a block or splatter paint on a canvass and get my rich uncle to buy it, does that make it art I mean, that single dot in the middle of the canvass painting sold for a lot and even an infant can do that

As an interesting end to the ideas stated, a businessman interviewed over the phone in his office stated that Art is something that you can sell to someone. By selling, I just dont mean monetarily. I also mean that you can sell the idea.

From the responses, we can gather that art will mean different things to different people and it is well summarized by the businessman art is an idea by one person sold to and accepted by another.
