I consider art as an expression of the soul. However, like many other art forms, and while talent is inherent, formal training is still necessary to be able to express oneself better and with a wider scheme of possibilities.
Being born in Lima, Peru in 1973, my initial exposures to art began when I was taught the graphic arts in a traditional way. I learned drawing, illustration in gouache, color theory, watercolors, and dry media through short courses and the tutelage of my peers and parents. I have been involved in art education since 1991, when as a student, I taught art to young pupils at different private schools throughout Lima, Peru. I now reside in Orange County, with my husband of eleven years, Mike and I have taught art for many organizations such as the Irvine Fine Arts Center, Newport Heights elementary, Boys Girls Club of Garden Grove, Art Creativity For Healing, Inc., the Huntington Beach Art Center and more. I have been teaching art throughout Orange County as My Arts Studio, Inc. since 2002.
To enrich myself further, I have continually participated in a wide range of studio art classes at different art organizations, schools, colleges, and art retreats, taught by award winning artists. Other than enriching myself through these exposures I find them very enjoyable. I opened my own art school in Newport Beach CA in 2005, and since then I began to concentrate on my own artwork as a self-taught artist, which I call canvas journaling. I work with a variety of mixed-media techniques. My pieces are very textural, with a use of bold colors and attempting to convey messages using lots of symbolism. My work reproduces familiar visual signs, and you may find some of my Roman Catholic beliefs rearranged into new conceptually layered pieces.
I personally believe that art is an interpretation of ones lifes desires, fears, joys, confusions, and of course, passions. As such, I consider art to be the most wonderful and purest non-verbal form of self-expression and communication. I have been with art for the most part of my life and my personal experience with being able to express myself in brush strokes and colors is an experience that I would like others to have. It is a deeply fulfilling and moving experience to see how images take shape with the movements of the brush and the applications of paint. People need to appreciate art in the same way to be able to know how important it is to society and community. As a form of aesthetic expression, art embodies the collective thoughts of society and community viewed from an artists perspective.
Art is an encapsulation of culture, and more importantly, an attempt to make beauty out of lifes harsh realities. For me to be able to convey this passion that I have for art to other people who might consider art to be a waste of time, I am seeking formal training in the field. While I can easily express myself in my art, I believe that I will need the proper vocabulary to communicate my ideas and thoughts more effectively in instruction. As an art educator it is important that I am able to convey the technicalities of my art form not only to seek acceptance as an artist but more importantly, to encourage young minds who might be interested in the world or art. Of course, further training and education in the field will help me become a better artist first, by giving me the necessary technical skills required in producing better artwork, and second, by giving me access to the artistic community that is the best venue for me and my art.
In the future, I hope to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree to be able to expand and grow as an artist and to continue to share my passion for the arts. In this life, there is one thing that I would like to achieve, and that is to be able to use my art to touch lives and make a difference.
