10 January 2010 The Enthroned Virgin and Child (1210-1220)
There are a lot of works of art depicting the enthroned Virgin and Child, all of which are different from one another. This version of the enthroned virgin and child is unique because it features a more detailed mother and child, with the Virgin Mary given a more matronly look, a look of authority which is not often seen of her character. This work of art shows another side of the enthroned virgin, wherein shes portrayed as a powerful, straight-faced leader rather than the usual warm, welcoming mother.
We can say that this version of the enthroned virgin and child appeals more on power of women. It is not often that Mary, the mother of Christ is portrayed as a powerful woman. She is often shown in artworks as a kind and loving mother, with a face that welcomes people rather than intimidate them. On this version of the enthroned virgin, Mary is given a long face, a look of authority without the hint of mercy or kindness. She doesnt wear a smile or a frown, making her poker-face more intimidating to look at. This sculpture shows another side of the Virgin Mary the mother of Christ. Shes not just a one dimensional, loving, welcoming mother because as shown in this artwork, she could also be authoritative, condescending and fearless (Sauerlnder, 1971).
The characteristics imbued on the Virgin Mary in this work of art shows that she can also be a matriarch, a powerful woman that commands respect and following not just by her kindness but also by her capability to rule over people. This shows that she is truly the mother of Christ and is fit to be the mother of the whole Christian world, and there is no doubt that she can fulfill her duty to the people and to the whole humanity.
Another unique characteristic of this artwork is the level of craftsmanship poured by the sculptor in this work, especially the attention to detail on the enthroned virgin and childs garments. Both of them and wearing flowing robes, with every fold and pleat well sculpted on the medium. This gives an air of royalty to both the Virgin Mary and the child Jesus, that theyre clad in flowing robes from head to foot. Even for the child Jesus, his robe was also flowing even though it was a lot smaller than that of the Virgin. It was given a lot of effort and attention by the sculptor and is something that is really commendable of the artwork.
By giving the enthroned virgin and child a very detailed, very well made robes, we can see that they are already far superior than any human beings. The details given to them just represent the respect that they deserve not only from the viewers but from everyone that believes in them. Somehow, this artwork portrays their superiority over all of us, and by recognizing this we are giving them the appropriate respect. The enthroned virgin and child are figures of authority, the figureheads of the Christianity. This sculpture reminds us of the power that they posses, of their superiority over human beings, and the respect and reverence that we should give them.
Another important aspect that we could consider in this sculpture is the detail given to the enthroned virgins seat and crown. Both of these are ornately designed, quite similar to the bejeweled accessories of kings and queens anywhere. These things signify their status, their superiority over others. The well-crafted throne and crown of the enthroned virgin and child signifies their status, of how they are positioned high above ordinary human beings. Just like or much more than the kings and queens, they are powerful and well respected all over the world.
Another notable aspect of this artwork is the serpent or the dragon that lies beneath the feet of the enthroned virgin. This is perhaps the same serpent that tempted Eve, as well as the serpent who tried to corrupt Jesus. Placing them beneath the virgins feet shows how Virgin Mary triumphed over evil, vanquishing her opponent and forever placing it under her feet. Again, this shows that the virgin is not just a motherly figure, but also a very powerful leader. She was able to win over evil, much like any powerful man could have done.
By trampling down the serpent, Virgin Marys followers and believers are assured that she is capable of saving them from evil, keeping them safe from harm. This just shows that her role is more than just a mother who endlessly cares for her children. She is also a protector, capable of beating down evil if the need arises. Just like Christ, she is capable of doing anything for the people she cares about, which is why she deserves that throne that shes in.
The Enthroned Virgin and Child of 1210-1220 is a work of art that shows us a different side of the Virgin Mary. Although she is perceived as the mother figure by her followers, she also possesses authoritative powers. She is both a mother and a protector, both loving and fierce. This is why she truly deserves the respect and reverence that her followers and believers give her, and she truly deserves the throne that she now occupies.
